Frequently Asked Questions

WHat is Bellydance Cohesion?

Bellydance Cohesion is the coming together of my passions in dance.

Movement, music, and history.

Classic and fusion styles.

Body, mind, and heart.

The movement in Bellydance Cohesion is comprised of technique drills, combinations, structured improvisation, and choreography. My approach to technique is informed by my passion for deliberate practice, meditation, and creative expression.

In addition to developing our dance skills and expressive faculties, we learn to understand, appreciate, and play the music that has classically accompanied bellydance performance. We learn to play Middle Eastern rhythms on the frame drum and finger cymbals. We learn to identify the sound of common instruments and we become acquainted with canonical compositions.

I also share with you what I’ve learned and continue to discover in my research on the development of bellydance through history. It’s a fascinating and complex transnational story replete with inspiring characters, tragedies, and mysteries.

Born from my appreciation for the many styles of bellydance, Cohesion movement quality is inspired by raks sharki and tribal styles. The technique is simple and elegant while being infinitely scalable toward greater richness and complexity.

When I practice Bellydance Cohesion I feel the joy of focused concentration. My ego slips away and I remember that my true nature is actually joy itself. For me, dance is a spiritual practice. The way of dance is the way of life.

why do we learn to play the frame drum?

You will learn Middle Eastern rhythms best if you learn to play them on an instrument.

The skills you are developing when you are playing percussion are the abilities you want to train into your dancing: the ability to breath and center the mind while performing a physical action. It is meditation. It is dance. It is music. It is deeply satisfying.

Frame drum is punk rock. Nearly anyone can afford one and learn to play one! Bellydancers have traditionally played instruments for one another and we are going to do that too. It is part of our lineage and our birthright.

WHy do we learn bellydance history?

The guiding principle behind Bellydance Cohesion is to bring together technique with context. Historicity lends an absolutely essential component of context to this form. We can't know what bellydance is if we don't know where it came from and how it has developed.

How much dancing will we do?

We will be dancing most of the time.
