Frequently Asked Questions

why do we learn to play the frame drum?

You will learn Middle Eastern rhythms best if you learn to play them on an instrument.

The skills you are developing when you are playing percussion are the abilities you want to train into your dancing: the ability to breath and center the mind while performing a physical action. It is meditation. It is dance. It is music. It is deeply satisfying.

Frame drum is punk rock. Nearly anyone can afford one and learn to play one! Bellydancers have traditionally played instruments for one another and we are going to do that too. It is part of our lineage and our birthright.

WHy do we learn bellydance history?

The guiding principle behind Bellydance Cohesion is to bring together technique with context. Historicity lends an absolutely essential component of context to this form. We can't know what bellydance is if we don't know where it came from and how it has developed.

How much dancing will we do?

We will be dancing most of the time.

what are the prerequisites for enrollment?

enrichment courses

The Stage 1 Enrichment Course is open to anyone. Though, I do recommend taking one year of local bellydance classes or Datura Online study before attending Stage 1.

The Stage 2 Enrichment Course is open to anyone who has completed the Stage 1 Enrichment Course. The Stage 3 Enrichment Course is open to anyone who has completed the Stage 2 Enrichment Course.

Each Enrichment Course ends with an in-class student assessment. The purpose of the assessment is for each person to track their progress and receive feedback. A participant’s performance on the assessment will not affect their ability to enroll in the next stage, as long as they have completed the entirety of the previous stage.

teacher trainings

The Stage 1 Teacher Training is open to anyone who has completed the Stage 1 Enrichment Course within the last 18 months.

The Stage 2 Teacher Training is open to anyone who has passed the Stage 1 Teacher Evaluation and who has completed the Stage 2 Enrichment Course within the last 18 months.

The Stage 3 Teacher Training is open to anyone who has passed the Stage 2 Teacher Evaluation and who has completed the Stage 3 Enrichment Course within the last 18 months.

Each Teacher Training ends with an in-class 2-part Teacher Evaluation, including:

  • Practice-instruction on one unit, or a partial unit, of the corresponding stage.

  • Performance on the Student Assessment given at the end of the corresponding stage.

Participants must pass the in-class Teacher Evaluation in order to become a Bellydance Cohesion Trained Teacher and enroll in the next stage of Teacher Training.

  • If the Teacher Evaluation is not passed in class, individuals may submit a video of their Student Assessment performance within 12 months of completing the teacher training (along with a $25 re-testing fee).

  • If the Teacher Evaluation is not passed within 12 months of taking the Teacher Training, individuals must re-enroll in the Teacher Training to be eligible to retake the Teacher Evaluation.
